Check Sent via FedEx
Florence sends a check (type TBD — personal/cashier's/corporate) to Buck via FedEx. This creates a sense of legitimacy.
Wire Info Request
Florence asks Buck: "Give me your wire info and I'll send the funds." This is the pivot point — the critical moment where the fraud executes.
Buck's Response (Current)
Buck is going to FedEx to retrieve the check, calling police, and going to the bank. This is the correct response.
Red Flags Identified
Unsolicited check sent via overnight delivery — creates urgency and perceived legitimacy.
Request for wire transfer information — wire transfers are instant, irreversible, and the #1 tool of fraud.
"I'll send funds via wire" — if they can wire funds, why did they send a check first? The check is the bait.
Classic overpayment/advance-fee pattern: check arrives → victim deposits → check bounces → wire is gone.
Targeting an RWA/crypto platform operator — scammers target people they assume handle large transactions.
The check may appear 100% genuine and still be counterfeit. Image analysis cannot prove authenticity.
Bank "funds available" does NOT mean the check has cleared. Under Reg CC, banks must make funds available before final settlement.
Even cashier's checks can be returned counterfeit weeks after deposit. The issuing bank is the only verification source.
How This Scam Works — Full Breakdown
This is a check-to-wire conversion fraud, one of the most common and damaging schemes targeting business operators.
Fraudster contacts victim with a plausible business proposition. May reference real entities, use professional language, or claim to be an investor interested in the victim's legitimate business.
A check arrives via FedEx/UPS (not USPS — overnight creates urgency). Looks official, may be drawn on a real bank. Can be personal, corporate, or counterfeit cashier's check.
"Send me your wire info and I'll wire the funds instead." Or: "Deposit the check, then wire a portion for fees/taxes." The goal is always to get an outbound wire.
Victim deposits check → bank shows "funds available" (Reg CC) → victim sends wire → 5-15 days later check bounces → bank reverses deposit → wire is gone → victim owes the bank.
Bottom Line: The check is paper. The wire is real money. Once wire funds leave your account, there is virtually zero chance of recovery. The FBI reports less than 5% of wire fraud funds are ever recovered.
